On the cuckoo thread, a fan-tailed cuckoo was seen and heard on the 5th of August at Ventnor in Phillip Island (southern Vic). On the same day we twice saw tiny Masked Lapwing chicks being vigorously protected by their parents on quite busy public roadside verges.
