Dear Aussers

A great weekend, super weather, planting trees with over 100 other people
in the Capertee Valley. Lots of good birds seen and I guess nearly
everyone got to see a Regent Honeyeater!

On the way home Sunday 20 August, stopped at Wallace Lake, Wallerawang, nw
of Lithgow, NSW, to check out the waterbirds. Over 600 coot present in the
choppy conditions, plus 50+ dusky moorhens, and a few Australian Grebes
(not a Crested or Hoary-headed in sight).

Not very exciting but the bonus was a pair of Buff-banded Rails, one of
which stood twitching its tail and looking at us in the car for a good two
minutes before gathering enough courage to cross the track in front of us
and join its mate that had made a quicker getaway. This is the first time
I've seen rails here although suspected them as the council now leaves
areas of reeds and grass uncut which has greatly benefitted Red-browed
Finches, cisticolas and reed warblers, amongst others.
