Re: crows / ravens
Having not visited Cowans Ponds I cannot comment on the bird species there.
I can tell you that the Torresian Crows (1 or 2 birds) which visit the
garden each year at this time of the year have various calls, some of which
have me thinking 'raven'. Townsville has both TC's and AR's so I go by the
lack of obvious hackles, and I expect different sub-species would have
slightly different calls.
Re: koels
On a recent stopover in Singapore I saw the Asian [Common] Koel at the
Botanic gardens and at the Golf Course. The call was very like that of the
Australian Koel so I too would be interested in whether the two species
are lumped or split, and on what basis.

The main thing is to enjoy it.

<DIV>Hello Birding-Ausers,</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Perhaps the ideal Australian bird field guide would:</DIV>
<DIV>- have the outside dimensions of The Slater Field Guide to =
Australian
Birds;</DIV>
<DIV>- be constructed on the same principal as Dr Who's time travel =
machine,
bigger on the inside than the outside;</DIV>
<DIV>- be illustrated by William T Cooper (drooool...... but who could =

it?);</DIV>
<DIV>- have the text written by Graham Pizzey;</DIV>

<DIV>I wonder who will be the first person to publish a field guide =

<DIV>So my grand total of sea birds is 19, not counting gulls and =
