Greetings,
Mike Carter is on the Canning.
Tony Palliser is in Phuket.
And the Northern Pintail IS in northern NSW!!!
Location: 6 km west of Grafton (Cowans Ponds Wetland
Reserve) on Gwydir Highway. Turn off at McDonald's at
northern end of town.
The bird is a sparkling male and seems quite settled.
It was observed by Paul Walbridge and myself today
from 10.30 am to 1.00 pm. Most of its time was spent
loafing with Black Ducks. Apparently it feeds mainly
at dawn and dusk. There is no doubt this is a wild
bird.
This is just the second record for Australia and the
first on the eastern seaboard. The only previous
record was of a male near Perth in 1985. It is an
extremely rare bird south of the equator.
Happy twitching!
