Hi Birders,
Following the successful visit to some private
property on Quorrobolong Creek, at the western foot of the Wattagan Ranges, near
Cessnock, in the Hunter Valley of NSW by the Central Coast NSWFOC Group when
some 30+ Regent Honeyeaters were seen on 29 July 2000, a return expedition
was made by Messrs David Geering, Craig Arms, Arthur Biggs and myself to see if
we could capture and colour-band the Regents.
The return visit was Friday 4th &
Saturday 5th August, appropriately on the Swift Parrot and Regent Honeyeater
Survey weekend, when we found 30+ Swift Parrots and 50+ Regent Honeyeaters at
the same location. The Swifties and Regents were feeding on the flowering
Spotted Gum, but some Regents were taking insects along the creek lines and
these were the birds we attempted to capture. Altogether we managed to
catch and colour-band four Regents, and no other birds with colour bands were
seen. Some Regents looked as if they were getting ready to nest and this will be
followed up over the next few weeks.
Other interesting birds seen at this site included
Scarlet, Black-chinned, Fuscous & Brown-headed Honeyaters, King Parrots,
Gang Gang & Gossy Black Cockatoos, Brown Treecreepers, Jacky Winters, Rose
Robin and Little Lorrikeets. A great site.
