Russ,
I reckon Maria is right. The call you described sounds like one of the
Eastern Yellow Robin's calls, which is described by Pizzey as "explosive
'chyop chyop'" or by Slater as "whistle-like 'tewp tewp'". This can be in
groups of two or three notes. The Yellow Robin is one of the first birds to
call in the morning and typically makes this call before dawn.

My best guess is Eastern Whipbird, as the call has some
familiarity with the female reply to the male's whip.Maria's guess is
either Grey Shrike Thrush or Eastern Yellow Robin. Any takers?
