Louise and I had a lovely day birding today (Fri July 28th) north west of
Sydney. It was cool but sunny and we took a route along the Hawkesbury River
from Wisemans Ferry to Lower Portland, over the ferry and up the Colo River
to the Putty Road, and then to Putty itself.
Along the Hawkesbury, we had the sight of two White-bellied Sea-eagles, a
Wedge-tailed Eagle and an Australian Hobby all soaring in the same binocular
'scope'. Not bad for a location less than 50km from the Sydney CBD. Other
good sightings included several Spotted Quail-thrush along the Putty Road
and at Putty, Grey-crowned Babblers, Speckled Warblers, Brown-headed
Honeyeaters, Varied Sitellas, Diamond Firetails and Wonga Pigeon. Nothing
spectacular, but it's a great area to go for a day out from Sydney and see
close to 100 species.
A large Red-bellied Black Snake which crossed the track purposefully in
front of our car at Putty gave a lie to my previously-held belief that
snakes are torpid and do not move around on cold winters days !
