Hi all,

Last Sunday my wife and i were making our way to the You Yangs from
Anglesea, when we decided to deviate a little and visit Serendip
Sanctuary in Lara. We had not been here before, and we were quite amazed
at the setup there. A great place for picnics and barbie's and excellent
for birding esspecially waders. They have rather large feral populations
of Cape Barren and Magpie geese, and captive breeding of Brolgas,Bush
Stone Curlew and Bustards( Victorian subspecies?), apparantly there may
only be 30 remaining in Victoria-in the Little Desert National Park. It
would also serve as a brilliant place for first timers as an
introduction to species that are very accessible, kids would love it --
as was evident in my 2 year old daughter!. They have a wide variety of
ducks including- Musk,Pink Eared,Blue billed and Aust Shelduck.Nesting
Whistling Kites, parties of Emu,White Winged Choughs, many Crested Pigeons
and Common Bronzewings,Purple Crowned
Lorikeets,Wallabies,Kangaroos,Pademelons...etc,etc.A variety of habitats
are presented including native grassland,marsh,swamp,eucalypt
woodland, shrubland and permanent/ephemeral wetlands. The young Parks
Victoria ranger was a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide and was
genuinely excited by our naturalistic endeavour. Quite surprisingly he
mentioned that the Grey Goshawk(white morph) and the odd Swift Parrot
does occasionally visit the area!.
Anyhow, is anyone else familiar with this place? because i will
definately re-visit in the not too distant future!.
P.S. The Sanctuary has been open for 6 years, and bird species has
increased from 140 to over 200.

Cheers,

Mark Kliene
