A couple of times over the last week, I've visited Woodlands Historic
Park next to Tullamarine Airport, Melbourne. The park features the
historic Woodlands homestead, but also has a large fenced nature reserve
with remnants of Red Box, Grey Box and River Red Gum woodland towards
the Gellibrand Hill end of the park. This area has a predator-proof
fence and an active 'fox-off' program, where NRE have been releasing
Eastern Barred Bandicoots to establish a free-ranging population. The
woodland remnants offer some reasonable birding as well, with birds such
as Red-capped Robin and Weebill more typical of drier inland areas
occurring quite close to the Melbourne GPO. I've attached the list of
birds from the last week, and can recommend it as a place to go for a
short day trip.
