Hi all,
Observed a lone Kookaburra today on powerlines in Power street,
Hawthorn.
Would this be regarded as unusual considering it is within a busy built
up area?
Cheers,
Mark Kliene.

eding populations occuring in the late 1970-1980s. The Diamond Firetail
seems headed in the same direction.
Today I was extremely happy to watch a pair 7.1 km along Cut Hill Rd,
Cobbity. They were feeding by the roadside and in a field, perching on fence
and overhead wires. Other birds feeding in the field and woodland regrowth
included Jacky Winters, Restless Flycatcher, Varied Sittellas, Crested
Shriketit, Golden Whistlers, Grey Shrike-thrush, Grey Fantail, Weebill and
Yellow-rumped Thornbills. A Pacific Baza flew over quite low giving good
views. Cut Hill Road has been the only area in Sydney where Diamond
Firetails ha
e been reported in recent years and have remained undetected in
numerous recent visits. It may just be a winter visitor to the district.
Other good birds in the Cobbity district are populations of Speckled
Warbler, Double-barred Finch and Brown-headed Honeyeater. Historically I
believe Painted Honeyeater, Black-eared Cuckoo and Hooded Robin used to
breed regularly. Western Gerygone, Blue-billed Duck, Regent Honeyeater and
Swift Parrot have been reported. Virtually all of the land is privately
owned so birding is strictly from the road unless you have landholders
permission. Purchase of some of the largest best woodland blocks by a
conservation agency would help retain some fast dwindling Sydney
biodiversity. The firetails were 100 metres past Cowandilla Charolais Stud
in a ridge top field viewed from the road. Please do not trespass.
Good birding
Dion
