Greetings,
I was talking to a friend today who is not a
birdwatcher and has just returned from the Dubbo area.
He was driving along the dirt roads between Dubbo and
Trundle where there is apparently a mouse plague at
the moment. At night he saw "hundreds" of owls in the
area. He said,"they were sitting in trees, on fence
posts and standing in the middle of the road. The owls
on the road had, 4 or 5 mice in their claws and
couldn't take off, so we had to drive around them."
He also told me the owls were "big white ones". I
presume they are Barn Owls and maybe Masked, it is
perhaps a little to far south for Grass Owls.
Anyway, for those in the area it may be worth a drive
out that way one night. It may also be the time to
keep a look out for Letter-Winged Kites.
If you go for a look please let me know what you find.
Regards
Richard Baxter
