Hi Birding-aussers, here is a short report for the Southport pelagic today, Saturday the 17th June.
Those present, P. Walbridge, R. Thomas, C.Barnes, M. Mathieson, P. Woodall, L.Woodall, S. Keates, W. Wilesmith, R. Dowling, G. Palmer, D. Price, R. Clarke, J. Ewen, B. Stephenson, R. Boulton, G. Anderson, A. Galbraith.
 
Weather conditions mainly fine but overcast, with maximum air temp. about 21C. Wind SE. 10-15 knots. Sea conditions moderate, with water temp. ranging from 18C inshore to about 23C out wide. The Sea World vessel travelled out to about 154 degrees east on the Continental Slope in order to find Black-bellied Storm Petrel for Rohan Clarke, we were successfull.
Species recorded are as follows;
 
  • Southern Giant Petrel - 2
  • Cape Petrel - 1
  • Providence Petrel - 27
  • Kermadec Petrel - 1 dark phase. (this species is starting to get boring).
  • Great-winged Petrel - 3
  • Antarctic Prion - 2
  • Fairy Prion - 26
  • Wandering Albatross - 3 (two stage 1, one stage 3)
  • Black-browed Albatross - 5
  • Yellow-nosed Albatross - 1
  • Wilson's Storm Petrel - 1
  • Black-bellied Storm Petrel - 2
  • Australasian Gannet - 10
  • Pied Cormorant - 1
  • Silver Gull - 15
  • Crested Tern - 16
  • Arctic Tern - 1
Overall not too bad a trip really and starting to look quite good for the SHOC 2000 trip on June 30th. Cheers - Paul Walbridge.
