Hello Allan and all
Up here at certain times of the year one can see Owlet Nightjars just
sitting by the side of the road or on low branches. I have rarely seen
them dead on the roads; Tawny Frogmouth and Spotted Nightjar corpses are
much more common.
Bush people here call any raptor that preys on domestic and ground-birds
a chicken-hawk. I've also heard the term applied to birds of prey that
hunt finches. The old-timers around Pine Creek tell me these birds (most
sound like goshawks by the description) will dive into a flock of
Gouldian Finches, going after the brightly-coloured adults.
