I am teaching MACBETH to Yr.12 at the moment and have been relishing in talking about the birds Shakespeare mentions... owl, chough, rook, raven, magpie (actually written as 'maggot-pie') and a 'martlet' which is seemingly a mix of martin and swiftlet!!!!!!!!! 'By maggot-pies, and choughs, and rooks brought forth The secret'st man of blood. What is the night?' (Act.III, Sc.iv) Peace and olde English, Lorne.
