Hi everybody -

The Birds Australia appeal for the purchase of Newhaven Station, 350 km WNW
of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, is beginning this week with a
big mailout of the appeal brochure. All Birds Australia members (and other
supporters) will receive this by next week at the latest, and they will
also go out with some bird club newsletters and other media. However,
those of you who are not on the mailing list and want a brochure can send
me a message (including a postal address) to be sent one. Also, if anybody
would like extra copies (to hand around at work, for example) - get in
touch with me to be sent some (please specify how many you think you might
need).

The five nationally threatened bird species recorded so far at Newhaven are:

Grey Honeyeater
Grey Falcon
Striated Grasswren
Princess Parrot
Night Parrot (based on what we think was a credible sighting by two people,
one of whom is an ornithologist, in January 1996 - a very dry time on
Newhaven, of a pair of birds at a stock watering trough at dusk - at
distances down to 3 metres).

I have a provisional list of birds seen on Newhaven to date of 138 species.
This total is bound to increase with more systematic and frequent
recording. If anyone wants to receive the list (by email attachment as an
MS Excel spreadsheet) please let me know.

Cheers,
Hugo
