Following up on Ian Temby's comments:
Our house has western red cedar woodwork, but I am glad to say we have
only once had an attempt by Sulphur-crested Cockatoos to damage it. They
were in the habit of landing on our TV aerial, so we were used to their
conversation close to the bedroom. On this particular summer morning, we
were still in bed and noticed that they seemed to be giggling away much
closer than usual. I got up and opened the curtain a crack, to find
myself eyeball to eyeball with one which had just pulled off a splinter
from the window frame! It flapped off to the balcony rail where its mate
was sitting. It may be anthropomorphic, but I have never seen two birds
look more guilty and embarrassed! When Brian joined me to look at them
(still only 4 feet from the window), they decided it was just too much
and flew off to the trees down the garden. They have not been back. I
presume that being startled on the first attempt put them off.
Which is no help if your local cockies have already developed the
habit of eating your house...
