Greetings
The last 2 Saturdays, I've spent short periods birding at Long Forest
Flora Reserve near Bacchus Marsh, Victoria. That's about 30km West of
Melbourne's western fringe, on the way to Ballarat. The principal
vegetation type at Long Forest is mallee (Bull Mallee Eucalyptus
behriana) - a very rare & localised community in southern Victoria.
There are also areas of Yellow Gum (E. leucoxylon), Blue Box (E.
baueriana) [also an isolated occurrence - the species is more widespread
in coastal eastern Victoria] and Grey Box (E. microcarpa). Some
mallee/inland birds have isolated populations there as well, though most
have declined and may disappear from this area in the near future. It's
well worth a visit - see the combined list from both days below (the
numbers on the left are frequency of recording - 1 = seen on one trip, 2
= seen on both).
