Subject:  Conservation controls and landholders

An item of some current interest with respect to the recent discussion on
landholders and conservation appeared in the weekend papers (eg. Melbourne AGE).

The following site is an opportunity for those interested in the impact of
conservation controls on landholders to make a submission to the House of
Representatives Committee on Environment and Heritage.

        http://www.aph.gov.au/house/committee/environ/pubgood/index.htm

Among the matters being being considered by the Committee are the following:
- the impact of conservation measures imposed by governments on landholders and
farmers
- intrenational developments in ameliorating the cost of conservation for
landholders;
- how to establish the private and public good components of conservation; and
- how to how to equitably share the costs associated with conservation among all
members of the community.

Note that the deadline for submissions is 19 May, 2000.
