Peter Waanders notes the decline in Gippsland Red Gums between Sale and
Bairnsdale in the [Victorian] Gippsland region. I have just spoken to some of
our botanists here in Melbourne and have been informed this is due to an insect
attack as follows.

The trees (Eucalytpus tereticornis) have suffered severe defoliation as a result
of Lerp (insect) attack which has been brought on by a high nitrogen level in
the eucalypts' leaves. I believe a talk was given at the Arthur Rylah Institute
(ARI) on this matter a few years ago. Richard Loyn, who is on the list, may
know more about this situation.
