Hi everyone,
I was down at Phillip Island in Westernport Bay in Victoria over the
last week and got a few hours to watch birds. I checked out the waders at
observation pt. and their were good numbers with lots in spectacular
breeding plumage. At least 400 Bar-tailed Godwits (many a beautifly orange
hue), 50+ Red Knot (also a few showing orange), 5+ Great Knot, Curlew
Sanpiper (also a few showing orange), Red-necked Stint, Eastern Curlew.
Also at least 200+ Pacific Gulls, 20 Caspian Tern, 20+ Pied Oystercatcher,
Royal and Yellow-billed Spoonbill. Also had Shining Bronze-cuckoo and
Fan-tailed Cuckoo regularly in our garden while at Swan Lake (near the
penguin parade) there were about 25 Cape Barren Geese and 30+ White-faced
Heron (unusual to see such congregations of WFHerons?).
I noticed that there were signs about breeding seabirds at Observation
Pt. (so I had to stay right at the waterline at the northern edge of the
Pt.) does anyone have any idea what species were breeding there. I could
see no breeding activity but didn't look around on the sand much.
Best Wishes
John Boyce
