Highlights of lists from members of the Blue Mountains Bird Observers for
JANUARY 2000.

YELLOW-BILLED SPOONBILL - 1 flying with a flock of 19 STRAW-NECKED IBIS,
over Megalong Valley on 19/1.
PACIFIC BAZA - 2 adults and 2 juveniles at Blaxland, from 20/1.
GREY GOSHAWK - Three records this month. One grey morph seen at Woodford on
28/1. The other two were birds (or possibly the same bird) with a taste for
chicken take-away, reported in chook yards at Lawson and Springwood.
AUSTRALIAN HOBBY - One flying amongst Sulphur-crested Cockatoos in a
carpark at Lawson, 21/1.
PEREGRINE FALCON - Seen taking a Wonga Pigeon in a backyard at Springwood.
GLOSSY BLACK-COCKATOO - A number of records including Lapstone, Sun Valley,
Bedford Creek, Hazelbrook and Kings Tableland.
HORSFIELD'S BRONZE-CUCKOO - One immature in Katoomba on 18/1.
COMMON KOEL - This season have been more numerous than ever before,
especially in the mid and upper mountains. In January they started to
quieten down.
POWERFUL OWL - Heard at Mount Riverview on 20/1. One adult seen on 29/1
beside Springwood Creek (near Faulconbridge), roosting with a dead
Kookaburra in its talons.
BARKING OWL - There has been a report of one flushed by bushwalkers on
Renitz Pass at Mount Victoria.
WHITE-THROATED NEEDLETAIL - Seen by members on only 3 days in January,
small groups each time.
SCARLET HONEYEATER - During late January, many in Birdwood Gully near
Faulconbridge, several at Woodford.
FLAME ROBIN - Our only report of a Petroica robin all month, this was at
Blackheath.
WHITE-BELLIED CUCKOO-SHRIKE - Reported at Springwood.
DUSKY WOODSWALLOW - Our only report so far this season of Duskies, approx 2
on Kings Tableland on 30/1.
GOLDFINCH - 4+ at Katoomba on 27/1.
FAIRY MARTIN - Several seen around the dam at Lake Medlow (unusual for
higher mountains, except during migration).
N.B. This is not a complete list of species, just observations of
particular interest.

The Blue Mountains Bird Observers compile records of birds within the Blue
Mountains City boundaries, which includes the area between Hawkesbury
Heights, Mount Riverview and Lapstone in the east; Megalong Valley, Shipley
Plateau and Mount York in the west and Mount Wilson in the north.
Annual membership is $17 and all members receive a full list of birds
reported each month and a detailed monthly newsletter including trip
reports and members' observations.
