Gunbower Island is one of the largest areas of River Red Gum forest in
existence (only Barmah is bigger in Victoria), and is on the Murray
River near Cohuna (east of Kerang and west of Echuca).
A full list is attached below my signature block, but the main points of
interest to me were as follows:
* Only one Red-chested Button-quail seen this trip, though platelets
were moderately abundant at the main site on 86 Break. Only one
Painted Button-quail seen too.
* White-throated Needletails and Fork-tailed Swifts seen 3 evenings
out of 7 overhead at camp. Using the barometer in my
wristwatch/altimeter, I estimated that the swifts appeared over the
area consistently 4-6 hours after the major pressure change had
occurred. This conflicts with what the texts commonly say about
them preceding the fronts. The needletails were also the greatest
distance inland I've ever seen in Victoria.
* A new frog for me - the Giant Banjo Frog (Limnodynastes interioris)
- very impressive animal, and probably a minor range extension in
Victoria. Trapped after a thunderstorm.
* Lots of birds still breeding (Little Friarbird, Weebill, Willie
Wagtail, Olive-backed Oriole, etc.....).
* Quite young Yellow-footed Antechinus (Antechinus flavipes) entering
the Elliott traps, showing some 2 months lag behind the breeding at
Barmah. Remarkable degree of breeding season asynchrony for this
genus I think.
