Surely the public service (which Richards email address suggest he is part

time to time

I still reckon there might be a few 'Sir Humphrey' types around even after
downsizing.
To clarify, I am not anti-public service, quite the opposite really. I once
worked in the Vic. DCFL (conservation, forest & lands), now sometimes called
Dept. of constant name review!. Joking aside, I enjoyed my stint working
there and I acknowledge the commitment and professionalism of most wildlife
people with whom I worked (more than one of them regularly contributes to
birding-aus). I'm sure it is much the same in other states of Australia, and
doubt the 'for profit-sector' could do as well on the same funding (I note
there are rumours of the privatization of the bird and bat banding scheme in
Canberra - how would that work?).
I agree that as bird people we are all 'on the same side', and I do hope
Richard eventually sees a penguin or two - they are very charismatic birds.
Cheers :)
