Here's my 2c and a bit more.
On tourism don't forget that some operators are good at natural
history: in 1996 I went with my mum on a 3-day trip run by Macs
Great Ocean Road Tours (SW Vic) aimed mainly at back-packers.
The driver (Ken) was great at pointing out birds, vegetation
(and housing!) types as well as talking about the history of
surfing and guiding us on walks etc. etc. Mum later went to
Sydney by Australian-Pacific and again the driver was pointing
out mistletoe, black-tailed cockies...
What sort of advertising is going on overseas in places like the
RSPB's "Birds" magazine and on the net ? "Birds" used to have
adverts by particular operators like Peregrine but nothing about
ways of finding out about all the others.
Many thanks for all the tips about encouraging children as I
hope we'll be able to put on some birding for them. So far
around here there's been more success in involving children
(and parent beginners) in pond-dipping, marine fossicking and
night wildlife walks.
