Hi everybody -
There will be a talk at the Birds Australia National Office (contact
details and street address below) by Dr Ian Newton at 5:30 PM on Thursday
5th February 2000 on his long-term study of the Eurasian Sparrowhawk,
Accipiter nisus. Some of you will be hearing Dr Newton talk about the
population ecology of owls in the northern hemisphere at the OWLS 2000
Conference just about to take place in Canberra, but if you are not able to
make it to Canberra it may be an opportunity for Melbourne based or
visiting raptorphiles, other ornos and keen birdos to meet someone with an
international reputation in raptor research.
Ian Newton is senior scientist with the Natural Environment Research
Council in the United Kingdom, and head of research on avian biology.
Throughout his career, Ian has researched the population ecology of birds,
especially birds of prey. He has published more than 250 papers in
scientific journals, written four books and edited three others. Ian is a
past President of the British Ecological Society and the current President
of the British Ornithologists' Union. He has served on many different
research and conservation committees, and is also a Fellow of the Royal
Society of London. Prof Newton will also be the Owls 2000 Chief Editor.
Space at BANO will be limiting, so if anybody is interested in coming along
please first get in touch with Susie Grant here, email:
<> to let us know and give us an idea of numbers.
Cheers,
Hugo
