Highlights of lists from members of the Blue Mountains Bird Observers for
NOVEMBER 99.

WHITE-NECKED HERON - A flock of about 20 flying south low over
Faulconbridge, early in the month. It's not often such a large group is
seen in our area.
LITTLE EAGLE - A pair were seen displaying over Hazelbrook on 30/11.
LEWIN'S RAIL - Caught by a cat in south Woodford. The bird was rescued by
WIRES but later died.
PEACEFUL DOVE - More reports than usual this month, including records in
the upper mountains at Wentworth Falls Lake and Blackheath. Not normally
found higher than Bullaburra.
GLOSSY BLACK-COCKATOO - The only record for November was at Lapstone on 8/11.
BRUSH CUCKOO - Arrived at Lapstone on 15/11.
HORSFIELD'S BRONZE-CUCKOO - Continued to be heard occasionally throughout
the month at Blackheath. An unusual species in the Blue Mountains although
it is common just west of the mountains.
COMMON KOEL - Arrival dates for the lower mountains were outlined in the
October report. In November this species arrived throughout the mid and
higher mountain towns and a look at the arrival dates suggests that they
work their way from east to west, or from lower to higher elevations.
Arrivals were: Woodford 14/11 (reportedly a month later than usual); Lawson
17/11; Wentworth Falls 22/11; and Katoomba 25/11. Also present in
Blackheath from October. Here in Katoomba they have been particularly vocal
this year.
WHITE-THROATED NIGHTJAR - Reported near Wentworth Falls north, same
location as last year.
WHITE-THROATED NEEDLETAILS - No reports in our area for November.
SCARLET HONEYEATER - One report, from Hazelbrook.
WHITE-BELLIED CUCKOO-SHRIKE - One passing through Woodford on 12/11.
WHITE-BROWED WOODSWALLOW - Four (2 males & 2 females) seen at Leura on
25/11. No reports of Dusky for the month.
(N.B. This is not a complete list of species, just observations of
particular interest.)
