Sunday, 5th December.
I have just returned
from the south coast carrying out Little Tern monitoring. At Lake Conjola I
recorded the following birds nesting, Little Tern- 4 nests, Red-capped Plover- 3
nests, Hooded Plover- 1 nest, (there has been one pair nesting here for the past
three years, is this the most northerly breeding site for this species?), Pied
Oystercatcher- 1 nest, (I remember that last year someone was inquiring about
nesting records for this species, if that person is still interested they can
contact me for details.)
At Lake Woolumboola, Culburra, we have 16 Little
Tern nests down, and I counted 100+ birds in breeding plumage, we are expecting
a very busy season and volunteers to monitor the colony are always
welcome.
You may have heard that the Little Tern colony at Towra Point is
not happening this season, the question is, where have they gone? A large number
of Towra Terns have been colour banded, so if any birdos encounter Little Terns
anywhere, with colour bands, could they record the colour sequence, location,
and date. I have only seen four of these birds at Lake
Woolumboola.
