Birds-nest industry future threatened

KUCHING -- The multi-million-ringgit birds-nest industry in Sabah and Sarawak is
in danger of being wiped out as swiflet numbers continue to decline, the Sun
newspaper reported yesterday.

It quoted Sarawak Museum assistant director Dr Charles Leh as saying the
industry must launch a conservation programme to remain sustainable.

He said the industry contributed RM100 million (S$44.7 million) annually to the
economies of the two Malaysian states.

"However, the industry is facing a crisis at the moment as the swiflets are
slowly dying out, with the total population declining by 25 per cent every
decade," he said.

If nothing was done to increase their numbers, Dr Leh said, black-nest swiflets
might soon be an endangered species, especially in Sarawak.
