Birding-aus,
Several weeks ago I posted a request for help re: a small flock of
Australian Wood Duck which were creating extra work for the cleaners of
the local swimming pool (i.e. the ducks were defecating in & around the
edge of the pool overnight).
Thankyou to all those who replied with suggestions to deter the birds.
For anybody interested the suggestions were as follows:
* create an alternative wetland/roosting site nearby
* involve local school children & swimmers by "adopting the ducks"
(i.e.. they donate a small amount of their time to help clean up the
mess before they swim each morning)
* trap & relocate the birds (although this has been shown to fail even
when the birds are moved up to 30km away)
* pass a mild electronic current through the water
* cover the pool with a tarp
* installing a visual screen/barrier about 1 metre high, made of hessian
or similar material & placed around the perimeter of the pool; the
barrier acts as a deterrant for the birds as they can't see the approach
of potential predators
Thanks once again. These ideas have been passed on to council.
