Hello Everyone
There has not been a lot from the far north probably because
we are so busy birdwatching, certainly there are lots of internationals here
at present braving the humid conditions.
It is almost a competition here to be the first to see the Buff-breasted
Paradise-Kingfishers. Any where from mid Oct to mid Nov. Ian Clayton brought
up a BbPK at Paluma just to the north of Townsville a week or two back, they
were heard at Kingfisher Park not long after and a day or two after that I
heard them at Daintree. My partner Denise does not rise as early as I, she
is the intelligent one, and her chances of beating me to the first sighting
are almost zero.
The Queensland coast is prone to storms during spring and last night
produced a beauty. Thunder, lightning, torrential rain and stong wind gusts
shook the place. Power was lost and few had a peaceful night's rest. Up at
4.00am and leave for work a little later, all was calm with forked lightning
over the ranges, mostly high cloud with stars and planets visible and light
appearing from the horizon. Hundreds of Spectacled Flying-foxes were on
their way back to their maternity camp. lots of Bush Stone-curlews scurrying
around on the sealed road for a bonanza of frogs.
Denise arose, stretched, opened the curtains and sheltering under a deck
chair on the balcony in front of her was the first sighting, for either of
us, of this year's first Buff-breasted Paradise-Kingfisher.
There is a moral in there somewhere.
