G'day all, Living on Gunbower Island (near Cohuna & the Murray River) in Nth. Victoria, I agree with Lawrie Conole that Crested Shrike-tits are commonly found in the dry forests and woodlands of River Red Gums. They certainly seem to prefer eucalypts with decorticating bark, as they are less common in areas of Grey Box. I cannot remember seeing them in Black Box country. (I will pay more attention). They are also residents and fairly common in the Terrick Terrick National Park (dry Cypress Pine, Yellow Box and Grey Box forest). They are mostly found feeding on the Yellow Box, though I have also seen them feeding in the Cypress Pines on the odd occasion.
