far as I know, there is no technical distinction
between doves and pigeons, and there are no strict
rules of usage. But, generally speaking, the name
dove is generally applied to the smaller Columbidae
with pointed tails, while the word pigeon is used
for the larger species with square or rounded tails.
This is about the same difference as is used for
parakeets and parrots, or for lorikeets and lories.
