Hello all!

A few people have had trouble locating the Pied and Black Honeyeaters at
Goschen Reserve in North West Victoria. They are still there.

The best way to find these birds is to take the dirt track into the reserve
that goes in from the Ulltima/Lake Boga sealed road. Drive in until you
come to an old hall with tennis courts beside it. The high tower will then
be on the left. If you listen, you normally will find the Pied Honeyeaters
calling - a high pitched, "peeeee, peeee, peeee" - around the hall. There
often are also Rufous Songlarks, Budgerigars, Woodswallows (mainly
White-browed, but also the occasional Masked and Dusky), and more common
birds to this area there.

If you go towards the tower, veering to the right, you ought to find Crimson
Chats and Budgerigars. If you veer towards the left (back towards the
bitumen) you will find the best places for the Black Honeyeater and the
Pied. This is where several of us have also picked up the White-faced
Honeyeater, and also Little Eagle, Collared Sparrowhawk and White-browed
Babblers. There are also Sacred Kingfishers in this area.

On the bitumen road, particularly on the overhead wires, you may find a
Red-backed Kingfisher, who is hanging around this area.

In the area of bushland across from the hall side, you may also find Black
and Pied Honeayters, Spotted Pardalote (Yellow-rumped form) and Hooded and
Red-capped Robins.

Back at the hall, if you go to the right, away from the tower, you can find
Woodswallows, a Boobook Owl, Common Bronzewings, Hooded Robins, Budgerigars,
Blue Bonnets (our southern yellow-vented form), and some of us on different
occasions have found Blue-winged Parrots here.

If you are visiting, remember it is only a small area easily disturbed and
damaged. Someone recently drove their car through part of the reserve,
flattening the flora. I don't think it helped the residents either,
especially the nesting ones. Please go quietly and carefully, and try not to
disturb things too much. There are some great birds there - we want to both
enjoy them but also look after them. Thanks!

If you are visiting (or even have visited) the area, and have made a list of
the birds seen, would you please consider sending me a copy. This is an area
regularly atlassed and monitored for birds, and it would be helpful to get
feedback from one of the most thorough searches ever made (so it seems) of
the reserve!

Regards,

Chris Coleborn
