To any birders who have been to Sturt National Park (NSW) in early July this
year.
I have been approached by a commercial group who filmed in Sturt NP to
provide sound of Blue-winged Kookaburra. While BWK was not actually filmed,
it is claimed two wet and bedraggled BWK were seen in SNP shortly after some
very heavy rain (early July). If BWK have been seen in SNP then in my
opinion it is reasonable to include sound of BWK in a documentary as
background sound! It seems there is no doubt Kookaburras were seen, but
which species.
This is an extension of range of way over 1000kms for BWK and would also be
a very unusual record for Laughing Kookaburra. One of the group filming is
said to be a competent birdwatcher and even though I queried the record they
are certain it was BWK. HANZAB and the Australian Bird Atlas do not show
either species being anywhere near SNP, particularly BWK. Alan Morris
(NSWFOC Records Officer) has advised me that in NSW Laughing Kookaburras
rarely even reach Mootwingie, 160 km NE of Broken Hill! There are no
acceptable records for BWK for NSW. In Qld BWK is rarely found west of Roma
in southern areas or much south of MT Isa in the north. Laughing Kookaburras
western limit (in the south) in Qld is roughly 144o (about Thargomindah).
I would be interested to hear if any birders who were out that way in early
July also encountered Kookaburras, particularly BWK.
Please reply to me direct.
