To any one interested in Cuckoos, the fig trees behind the ranger's
house at Cattai National Park are providing excellent value with a male
NZ Shining Bronze Cuckoo present in the early afternoon on 18.10.99. Key
features include wide bill base, bright green crown and nape, white
edging to feathers over frons, solid green bars across breast, whiter
face and prominent white ear coverts. Also present on 18-19.10 were an
adult and juvenile Australian Shining Bronze-cuckoo, and adult and
immature female Pallid Cuckoo, two Brush Cuckoos and two Fan-tailed
Cuckoos. The attraction are the butterfly caterpillars in the viny
thicket which surrounds the fig trees. No Regent Bowerbirds seen but
White-winged Trillers and Cicadabirds were there. Also saw 2 Water
Whistle Ducks at Pitt Town on 18th but could not locate them on 19th
after 35 mm of overnight rain had partially flooded the lagoon. They are
probably lurking around somewhere close.
