Visiting birder Robin Benson from Gosford found himself being watched by two
roosting Powerful Owls on the Toowoomba range escarpment yesterday.
Powerful Owls have been a long-standing resident in the escarpment vine
scrub, but have only been intermittently recorded since our first confirmed
record in 1975 - and haven't been sighted at all over the last few years.
Interestingly, with increasing numbers of interstate and overseas birders
coming to the Lockyer Valley these days the result is not only good value
for the visiting birders, but also good value for us here with all the extra
eyes and person-hours out there contributing to our own monitoring of local
bird populations and status.
By the way, does anyone know how long it is since there was a sighting of
the Sooty Owl in the well-known roost tree on the Scenic Track in the Bunya
Mountains NP. I know of several people, myself included, who have called in
to see if it was home over the last few weeks, but all without success.
However, in the last few days the same track has yielded several Noisy
Pittas, Paradise Riflebirds, Bassian Thrush and plenty of Green Catbirds all
within a few hundred metres of the 'roost tree', so it's hard to feel too
disappointed about the Sooty Owl.
