As of 17/10/1999 I've had 53 replies to my field guide survey. That's
still well short of the 68 received in the April 1998 survey, and there
are more of us on Birding-Aus now! The survey is still open until 31
October, and when I return from the field in about a week, I'm hoping to
see a big heap of replies in my e-mail inbox. If you participated last
time, please reply again. The results so far indicate some shifts in
attitude towards the main guides, and I'm interested to see if those
trends will hold up with a bigger sample.

The details of the survey are below - please join in.

Dear Birding-Aus-ers

In the never ending search for the perfect field guide, I noticed that
my field guide survey was mentioned on the list again recently as a
source of information. When I conducted the original survey in April
last year (1998), there were about 410 subscribers on Birding-Aus and I
received 68 replies. For the details see:

http://www.users.bigpond.com/ocoineoil/sections/docs/fguide.html

There must be at least 100 more subscribers on the list now, and a
second edition of the top selling Pizzey & Knight book has been
released. Perhaps this is the time to re-visit the survey.

Below are the questions - slightly modified from the first survey. (The
original questions are included on my web page.) If you are interested
in having your opinion counted, please reply to me directly (NOT THE
LIST) by 3 1 O C T O B E R 1 9 9 9.

   * 1. Where do you live (Country, state, city)?
   * 2a. How many years have you been birding?
   * 2b. How many years in Australia?)
   * 3. What gender & age bracket do you fit into? [M/F] [<20] [20-40]
     [40-60] [>60].
   * 4a. What is your favourite birding field guide for use throughout
Australia? [Flegg] [Pizzey & Doyle] [Pizzey & Knight] [Simpson &
Day] [Slater, 2 volumes] [Slater, Slater & Slater, 1 volume] [other
     ... specify].
   * 4b. What is your favourite back-up field guide?
   * 5. The reason(s) for your choice in Q4 (in 75 words or less!).
   * 6. How many species of Australian birds have you seen (recorded on
your life list, if you have one)?

After the Twitchathon is out of the way, then we can all focus on the
two great questions (a. what is the most popular field guide in
Australia, and b. will Australia become a republic?). I'll attempt to
get the results up on my web site during November.
