Highlights from twice-weekly Canberra Ornithologists' Group (COG) hotline,
for period ending 6 April (some reports are of earlier obs).
After a very lengthy break, during which I've had the pleasure of covering
much of the country between Cairns and Perth (both paid and unpaid), as well
as another much sadder interruption, I'll try to resume (more or less)
weekly reports from our region ie the southern highlands, adjacent coast,
and south-western slopes of NSW.
No point in going back too far, so I'll just resume with the past couple of
weeks. Returns up to then have been going (or rather coming!) more or less
to plan.
SATIN FLYCATCHER 25/9 inner suburban Yarralumla [this passage
migrant, heading up into the Brindabella Range, is a very consistent October
arrival, so this bird is a tad early]
CUCKOOS (epecially Pallid and Horsefield's Bronze) we've been knee-deep in
them for some time; Pallids are causing disturbed nights all over Canberra!
SCARLET HONEYEATER 26/9 inner suburban Chapman [a once-in-several-years
visitor]
WHITE-WINGED TRILLER 25/9 suburban Curtin [first return, I THINK. This is
about right for one of the last to return, though they were early the last
two years]
SUPERB PARROTS well and truly back across a wide area to the west of here
DOLLARBIRD 6/10 inner suburban Mt Ainslie [right on cue]
BASSIAN THRUSH 6/10 Mt Ainslie, on summit [this is the only record that I
know of for our suburbia, other than the small Botanic Gardens population]
CHANNEL-BILLED CUCKOO 11/10 suburban Torrens [normally well outside their
range, though they stray down the coast. It follows a few records last year,
and I wonder if they're following the relatively new widespread low altitude
Pied Currawong nesting around here]
