That programme about Galapagos finches on ABC TV just now was amazing ! A wonderful demonstration of how extreme climate changes can affect species and their survival and the consequent potential effects in terms of evolution. But even more the impact of learned behaviour in accelerating evolutionary change. In a few years the finches had apparently learnt both how to smash booby eggs and to drink booby blood ! In the last few days we had our first records of scaly-breasted lorikeets attempting to nest in Canary Island palms..... Michael Norris Hampton, Vic.
