Following Sean Pywell's posting, has anyone ever really changed the minds of the open spaces managers who want to clear undergrowth from parks etc. because of "baddies" ? They rapidly retreat to the position that if the possibility of rape, murder etc. etc. has been mentioned then their public liability costs could be enormous if something nasty does happen (the same argument is also used to reject appeals to retain old trees). But I suspect they simply do not like the disorder of undergrowth (it's difficult to get at the litter, encourages rats, weeds....) . Perhaps they are jealous of what humans might get up to in the bushes ! So in most of our parks (rather than natural/semi-natural areas) the cover for scrubwrens (and shelter for small birds from the larger honeyeaters) goes. Any success stories very welcome !
