With lots of information from Murray Lord, I have just spent three days
birding around Hobart. My main task was to see the Scrubtit which had
eluded me at Fern Tree last year. This time, I spent three periods of
about two hours each in and around the Fern Glade Track at Fern Tree, and
saw the bird briefly on about three occasions. When seen in good light, it
seemed to show much more contrast than the illustrations in the
guides. Certainly, when perched in a tree, it is nothing like the
Tasmanian Scrubwren. I also looked for the bird without success at Mount
Field National Park.
Following Murray Lord's posting about the Peter Murrell Reserve, just south
of Hobart, I set out to see all 12 of the Tasmanian endemics on one
day. This was not very difficult, since the Forty-spotted Pardalotes
seemed to be everywhere at the reserve, much easier to see there than at
Tinderbox. At Peter Murrell, I saw Forty-spotted, Tasmanian Native Hen,
Yellow Wattlebird, Yellow-throated and Black-headed Honeyeater and Dusky
Robin. At Fern Tree, I saw Tasmanian Scrubwren, Scrubtit, Tasmanian
Thornbill, Green Rosella and Black Currawong. I had to go to Neika, just
south of Fern Tree to see the Strong-billed Honeyeater.
