Today I heard my first Koel for the season at Seven Hills (approx 40 km west of Sydney). It sounded like one of the same Koels that arrives here year after year and it's one that sounds very hoarse indeed. One of these day's it's surely going to loose its voice. Despite the very humid weather over the past few weeks in Sydney, I haven't seen/heard any Channel-billed Cuckoos in my area which normally arrive earlier than the Koels. I have kept records of Koel arrivals and departures in my suburb over the last 10 or so years, and they seem to be consistant in arriving within the last week of September or 1st week of October.
