My antique Garmin GPS38 can get a 2D fix (as opposed to a 3D fix) with less
than the requisite number of satellites.

Garmin GPS2????  Maybe you mean a GPS12 - and if that's the case, the
multi-channel units of all brands are much faster than the single-channel
sequencing units (like mine).
