Fellow Birders,
Please support the natural bushland link connecting Garigal and Ku-Ring-Gai
Chase Natural
Parks which is under threat from development.
360,000 square meters (89 acres) of former Crown Land for 1km either side of
Mona Vale
Road is listed for auction sale by the Metropolitan Aboriginal Lands Council.
This land
also forms a crucial part of the natural bushland vista along Mona Vale Rd. and
facilitates the movement of birds and fauna between the two National Parks.
There is to be a Public Rally this Saturday 21st August 99, Mona Vale Road,
St Ives
.Meet 500m east of St Ives Show ground on the Southern side, at 1pm.
This is a letter being sent to the State Environmental Minister Hon R.J.Debus
M.P.,
Premier of N.S.W. Bob Carr, State M.P. for Davidson Andrew Humpherson, Tim
Macdonald
co-ordinator Sydney Northern Beaches Total Catchment Management at the Coastal
Environment
Centre.
and F.O.C.N.S.W. Conservation officer Susanne Giuffre.
Re :- Auction of bushland (former Crown Land) now owned by Metropolitan
Aboriginal Land
Council, comprising two lots (27.1ha on the southern side and 8.9ha on the
northern side
of Mona Vale Road) to be auctioned on September 14th 1999.
On behalf of Ku-Ring-Gai Birdwatchers we wish to ask that the N.S.W. State
Government
buy back or stop the auction of this vital ridge top bushland between St. Ives
Showground
and Forest Way, Terrey Hills. We deplore any more development along this area
as it is a
vital wildlife corridor between the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park and Garigal
National
Park that extends from upper Sydney Harbour to Broken Bay.
If this land is not left in it?s natural state to facilitate the movement of
our native
birds and animals between these two National Parks it will mean reduction in
their
numbers.
In December of 1990, when we also fought to retain this land and wildlife
corridor, we
were given the understanding that if the land were to be given to the
Aboriginal Land
Council it would be incorporated into part of the then Davidson S.R.A. (now
Garigal
National Park ) and the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park, as they had a duty to
keep their
land as natural bushland and care for the flora and fauna, for their people.
Yours Faithfully
H.Lauris Hopkins,
For and on behalf of the Ku-Ring-Gai Birdwatchers.
