Dear OzBirders
I am conducting research into the characteristics of the birdwatching
industry in Australia. Like a lot of tourism, there are plenty of theories
but very little data but it appears that the people who spend money on
going birdwatching (by definition, a 'birdwatching tourist') may show some
unexpected features.
If you have ever been a birdwatching tourist (here or overseas), how would
you respond to the following questions. (These are statements I hear a lot
and am posing them as a hypotheses to be assessed).
1 "Australian birdwatchers in Australia are almost completely independent.
They birdwatch mainly without using any of the birding companies"
2 "Australian birdwatchers spend very little on their birding while in
Australia (apart from travel), but are just as likely to pay for expensive
birding trips overseas"
3 "A clear majority of the clients of the birdwatching operators are from
overseas; relatively few are Australians"
4 "Birdwatchers are more interested in seeing birds than in conserving them"
I would be extremely interested to hear your views of these (somewhat
provacative) statements or any other ideas on the topic you may have.
cheers
Darryl Jones
