I did two areas for this survey
1 Reedy Lake near Geelong, Victoria. Last year OBPs roosted in an area of
lignum at the north end of the lake, and fed on weeds and saltmarsh nearby.
The Lake was almost dry at the time.
Although the Lake is full this year, the place where they were is still
dry, with shallow water (ankle deep) for a distance of up to 200 metres or
so. However this is a sort of island in the Lake, and unfortunately it is
now necessary to wade there - about half an hour each way through
ABSOLUTELY ICY water just above knee deep.
I saw three Bitterns but I did not see any OBPs.
2 Freshwater Lake (Clow's Swamp) between Ocean Grove and Point Lonsdale.
Low water level, lots of Grey and Chestnut Teal, 16 B W Shovellers, Pied
Stilts and Redcapped Plovers and no Doublebanded Plovers
No OBPs
It is a long time since they were found here. There are still suitable plants.
