Subject: French Island (Vic.) OBP count
A short report for the French Island OBP team - 24/7/99
French Island is in Western Port Bay south-east of Melbourne. The bay is
one of Victoria's Ramsar sites. Members of the Friends of French Island,
myself and wife Kaye boated across mid morning and then dispersed to two
main areas. The west coast beach from Chilcott Rocks toTortoise Head and
the far north-east at the Duck Splash saltmarsh.
Like last year no Orange-bellied Parrots (or any Neophema's) seen this
time, however as usual an interesting trip with plenty of birdlife and a
new orchid site thrown in for our efforts.
Weather: Cool N to NW wind with some drizzle and sunshine later. High tide
meant the saltmarshes had plenty of water.
List for the day as follows:
Whistling Kite, Swamp Harrier, Brown Falcon, Australian Kestrel.
Yellow-rumped Thornbill, , Striated Thornbill.
White-eared Honeyeater, White-plumed H/E, Yellow-winged H/E.
Aust. Pelican, Black Swan, White-faced Heron, Grey Teal, Black Duck, Masked
Lapwing, Aust. Shelduck, Royal Spoonbill, Sacred Ibis.
Grey Currawong, Aust. Magpie, Grey Fantail, Yellow Robin, Flame Robin,
Willy Wagtail, Little Grassbird, White-fronted Chat, Richards Pipit,
White-browed Scrubwren, Welcome Swallow, Eastern Rosella, Yellow-tailed Bk.
Cockatoo, Red-browed Finch, Grey Shrike Thrush.
Starling, H Sparrow, Goldfinch.
Mammals: Feral Goat (numerous fresh tracks in sand on Causeway Rd.),
Koalas in similar location and at 'Gartsides'.
Highlights: Flame Robins and RB Finch's feeding at the old house site at
Gartsides and a flock of 32 Royal Spoonbills at the Duck Splash. Finding a
new orchid site.
