Bird deaths still continue at Collinsville, the following is the article
that appeared on the front page of the Bowen Independent today Friday 23
July 1999.
EPA investigates bird deaths.
The Environmental Protection Agency is investigating the mysterious bird
deaths in Collinsville.
The wildlife section of the EPA is on the case with the Dept. of Primary
Industries and wildlife carers in Collinsville and Scotsville.
Councillor David Robertson told last weeks Bowen Shire Council meeting that
the deaths were continuing.
"There were dead magpies and one dead crow near my house the other day", Cr
Robertson said.
"Birds are lying on the ground frothing at the mouth."
Concerns that bird deaths came from the Council tip have proved unfounded.
The Government agencies have agreed to cover the costs involved in analysing
the dead birds for chemicals. End.
This problem has been ongoing since May. Most distressing for the community
is the fact that little info is being made available by those investigating
the cause.
Is someone from Victoria testing the baits that they will be using for the
control of Cockatoos in that State?
