Dear all
Here's my humble opinion, from across the ocean in Cape Town, South
Africa, about reporting rare birds.
If I think I've seen a vagrant bird, I report that there's a possible
whatever it is on the South African bird net, give the most detailed
description as possible of it, so that if people want to try and see
it, they can. If it is the bird, at least they have an opportunity of
seeing it, although they are taking a chance, and they may waste
petrol money. I think that it is far better to take a chance, than
to dip.
Unfortunately, some people build up a reputation for themselves of
dogmatically reporting dicy sightings. But I've learned that even
these people sometimes report good birds, and I thank them for
helping me to lengthen my lifelist (and at other times wasting my
money).
Chris
