I looked at the site suggested by Martin O'Brien http://www.act.gov.au/environ/magpies.html Bit surprising it doesn't mention the importance of protecting eyes, eg. by wearing glasses/goggles or - better still for an avid birdo - binoculars attached to the helmet. This annual topic always reminds me of the black-shouldered kite I was watching not far from its nest. It got bigger and bigger in my bins - fortunately I ducked in time.
